Desi Senior Women’s Group in OC
This group is for women 55+ coming from India, Bangladesh & Pakistan, dealing with loneliness & language barriers.
Regardless of the facts of a person’s isolation, seniors who feel lonely and isolated are more likely to report also having poor physical and/or mental health. Connecting seniors with social resources, such as senior centers and meal delivery programs, is one way to combat feelings of isolation.
Cognitive Decline in Seniors
Perceived loneliness contributes to cognitive decline and risk of dementia. Dr. John Cacioppo, a neuroscientist and psychologist at the University of Chicago, has been studying social isolation for 30 years. One frightening finding is that feelings of loneliness are linked to poor cognitive performance and quicker cognitive decline.
South Asian Seniors Are the Invisible Group
Growing racial and ethnic diversity is a reality in the United States. Older adults who are immigrants, non-white, or ethnic minorities will become increasingly common. Due to the fact that overall the Indian, Pakistani, Bengali immigrants are doing well and belong to the middle to upper middle segment of American society and the focus is on persons who are in the working ages ranges from 25-65, not much attention is paid to those over 65 especially their role in the family and the community.
Ethnic Seniors of South Asia – Bangladesh, Indian and Pakistan – are the invisible group. Even though their children make a tremendous effort to take care of their physical as well as their emotional needs, most seniors living with their Indian, Bangladeshi or Pakistani adult children feel that they are unable to express themselves freely. They often experience feelings of guilt as they feel they are not contributing in any way to their immediate families. The seniors feel that they have rich and complex experiences to offer their children and grandchildren, which are not being tapped.
This group of Seniors living in America are often tired of being bored, and sometimes feel angry, alienated, and disempowered. They are isolated due to language barriers, inability to leave the home by themselves, and cultural challenges. They feel lonely, depressed or sad, and often a burden on their families and community.
